Education Programs

For years, Austin Utilities has been providing utility service to the community of Austin. As a part of these services, we have always been committed to helping our customers understand their utility. Austin Utilities offers a variety of programs and presentation that allow our customers – young and old – to learn more about the valuable resources we provide – electricity, natural gas and water.

Learn About Community Solar
Solar is a hot topic in the utility world right now. For a variety of reasons from shady locations to shabby rooftops, a solar project doesn’t make sense for many homes and business. Community Solar can be a great alternative.

A community solar project—sometimes referred to as a solar garden or shared renewable energy plant—is a solar power plant whose electricity is shared by more than one household. Austin Utilities will be offering customers an opportunity to buy into a community solar project. Come to this workshop to understand more about community solar so you can decide if it’s right for you.

Water Wise Kids
For students entering grades 4-6
Limit 20 students per class

You turn on the faucet at home and clean, fresh water comes out of the tap. But do you ever wonder where that water comes from and how that water is delivered to your home so you can enjoy a refreshing cold glass of water? Students in this class will spend part of their time in the classroom learning basics about how water is delivered to homes and how to help conserve water. Students will then take a tour of our onsite water lab, well house and storage tank for a close up view of the path of water.

Switched On Kids
For students entering grades 4-6
Class limit 20 students

You can’t see, touch or smell electricity, but without it your life would be pretty dark. Students will start the day in the classroom learning basics about how electricity is delivered to homes. We’ll also talk about conservation. Then we’ll venture to our electric garage where students will have a chance to try out lineworker clothing and equipment, experience electric bucket trucks up close, and see a real lineworker demonstrate pole climbing techniques. Using an electric safety demonstration board we will show students how to play and stay safe around electric lines.
